Scott Schuldt
"I work in hand-sewn beadwork and mixed media. My work is often narrative but can also be formed by thoughts, meditations or research that occurs during the building of a piece. As I work I often find the subject to be more complex than it first appeared and intertwined with other issues and ideas. Recently I have added political and social topics to my work while continuing to work in nature and historical themes." While working as an engineer and teaching himself about Northwest Coastal Native American Art, Schuldt began working in beadwork. He discovered a natural inclination to sew, drawing on a long tradition of skilled needle workers in his family. The first work he exhibited (2003) was purchased by New York's Museum of Arts and Design in 2004. A year later, he decided to drop engineering to pursue artwork full time. Schuldt's work is incredible in its beauty, detail and depth. He can transform something as everyday as a backpack into a monument for deteriorating salmon habitats ("Clarks's Map, Celilo Falls," 2002). Other beadwork documents the floor plans of 18th century Mandan/Hidatsa houses (from the central Dakotas), or the curling bends of the Mississippi. In "Calving Season"(2006) Schuldt uses beads on deer skin to illustrate the ecologic intricacies of caribou breeding. Colorful graphs and statistical data are displayed along the length of the hide. "Two key factors that go into the equation on the spine is a "green-ness value" which represents the vegetation quality, and a predator risk value. The more concentrated the herd is when it calves, the lower the risk is to predators." Schuldt brings the hard science of an engineer, a passion for hand-crafted odes to the natural world and a keen graphic sense of the future/traditional to his work. Information
