Here's a taste of Doug Quin's (see "Beneath the Sea Ice Edge") approach to composition. This CD-length piece was originally commissioned by WDR (German public radio). Its foundation is forest soundscapes from Brazil, Madagascar, and Kenya (both "pure" and layered into composed sections); the resonance of these sounds informs a wide range of music, from original pieces for African chorus, to improvised woodwinds and electronic reveries. Here, we dive into the midst of the most elaborate electronic section, and pass through a beautiful transition back to the voices of the forest. In some mysterious way, the musical elements seem to tune our ears to hear the natural voices anew.
