Buster Simpson, Growing Vine Street-Vertical Landscape Downspout, 1999, Seattle, Washington

First designed in 1978, Simpsonís ìvertical landscapes,î ferns placed in plumbing pipes attached to the sides of buildings, offer a cost-effective way to trap and clean stormwater runoff from public buildings, before it enters the public sewer. Limestone placed in the pipesí elbows neutralizes the waterís acidity.
