Between April 1 and April 22, 1993, Cambridge residents dropped off ten tons of glass and mirror. The Spectrum Glass Company in Woodinville, Washington donated the balance to create 22 tons of crushed glass and mirror, which was then mixed into asphalt. This sparkling half-mile-long, wheel-chair accessible glassphalt path passes over a mound, a man-made hill leftover from its landfill days. The views are extraordinary from this 72 foot high hill the highest point in Cambridge. Upon completion, the hilltop will contain over-sized thrones for a queen and king, and a colorful urban dancefloor made from pre-consumer waste rubber. Laderman Ukeles use of recycled materials keeps the memory of their former lives intact. |
