Susan Liebovitz Steinman, Gardens to Go

Susan Liebovitz Steinman, Gardens to Go, 2001 Peralta, Union and 32nd Streets, West Oakland, CA

About 50 people worked on this abandoned intersection to demonstrate how gardens can sprout anywhere, despite the prevalence of lead pollution, typical of older neighborhoods. In partnership with West Oakland Neighbors (WON), she spent more than one and a half years organizing and lobbying to realize WONís dream of having a community garden to grow food for local needs. Community gardeners earn the fruits of their labors.
