The left image depicts NMR-GPs project statement overlaying the image of the massive slag mountain. Over a period of 50 years, the Duquesne Steel Company illegally dumped millions of tons of slag, a by-product of the steel industry, onto this site to create this ten-story-high mountain of hard, porous slag. By later spraying a mulch containing a mixture of nutrients and grass seeds onto this man-made landform, the NMR-GP team demonstrated how to transform this gray mountain into a slaggarden. |
