Ocean Earth, Methane Fire, Spacex 2, Exeter, United Kingdom, 2001

This “soil rig,” first introduced at the 1993 “Venice Biennale,” was designed to grow green algae vertically in the ocean. The algae is harvested and converted to a valuable non-polluting energy resource. While scientists attempting such research have been routinely blocked, Ocean Earth managed to demonstrate the practicality of this process in 2001, using a horizontal rig to grow green algae in England’s Exe River within the Lyme Bay basin. The algae was then fermented and burned as methane gas, hence Methane Fire. Ocean Earth accomplished this with additional contributions from Dr. Samantha Lavender, University of Plymouth and Dr. Stephen Hughes, University of Exeter.
