Newton Harrison and Richard Feynman Notations on the Ecosystem of the Western Salt Works (with the inclusion of Brine Shrimp), 1971, “Art & Technology” Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, California

Newton’s second project with Richard Feynman, now considered Survival Piece #2, launched the Survival Series (1970 - 1973) and introduced self-sufficient farming techniques to feed an over-populated world. Survival Piece # 2, one of the simplest discrete ecosystems, involved the Brine Shrimp Artemia and the algae Dunalliela. The Survival Series included a Hog Pasture (#3) for Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts’ “Earth, Air, Fire, Water” exhibition, Portable Orchard (#4) for the California State University-Fullerton Gallery, and Full Farm Condensed (#6) for the opening of the Contemporary Art Museum, Houston. Several exhibitions were accompanied by Helen’s cooking and serving performances.
