Inmates throughout the world have had to turn to the materials at hand to create. Newspapers, cigarette and gum wrappers, hankerchiefs, unravelled socks and toilet paper are readily accesible to them, and many artistic prisoners pass the time recycling these discarded scraps into sculptures, paintings, purses, baskets, and other objects to send or sell to loved ones and collectors outside the prison walls.
