Art & Ecology:

Curriculum Integration

This section presents guidelines for art and ecology curriculum integration. We then present several stories by teachers about their approaches to implementing an interdisciplinary unit involving art and ecology.

Introduction

Don Krug provides a short overview of curriculum integration guidelines for organizing and teaching art and ecology ideas and issues.

Pickerington Elementary School

Mary Sheridan illustrates the art and ecology program at Pickerington Elementary School. She highlights the process she used to create a tile exchange project in which 120 fourth grade students were partnered with artists from around the world. The students and artists exchanged ideas about their own local environmental issues.

Lima West Middle School

Susan Sherlock describes a school-based ecological project intended to improve the natural environment of the school and involve students in an exploration of local environmental issues from interdisciplinary perspectives.

Dublin Scioto High School

Janet Reger describes how her high school art class undertook an interdisciplinary project to investigate ecological art and the impact on the local community of the key environmental issues they discovered.

The Deep Creek School

Dan Collins, Charles Garoian, and Laurie Lundquist provide a short introduction to the Deep Creek School. From there you can jump directly to the Deep Creek School's site and explore their programs more fully.
