Ron Hirschi is a wildlife ecologist and children's book author. He was a wildlife biologist for the Washington Department of Wildlife and the state's first urban wildlife biologist. In 1988-1989, he was a fisheries biologist for the Port Gamble S'Klallam Tribe, where he worked to protect and restore salmon streams vital to the tribe. Through his books he promotes restoration ecology; he is interested in helping people work together within their communities to learn about and heal their environments. Hirschi collaborates with visual artists to create picture books that are expressive of the natural world. Hirschi also uses the collaborative approach in his work with children, leading them in an exploration of their environment. Included among his forty-some books are City Geese, What Is a Bird?, Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall, Save Our Wetlands, Seya's Song, and his newest, Salmon and Cedar. Many of his books have been cited as Best Trade Book by the National Association of Science Teachers. Visiting schools and communities throughout the country, Mr. Hirschi uses a hands-on science approach to engage elementary students in learning about the environment. He also teaches college credit workshops and gives presentations to librarians, science teachers, and other educators.
